| After
a series of cleaning operations, the metal piece incorporating
the logo or design required is ready to have the colour
applied.
For colour we use vitreous enamel because it gives a
hard surface and is scratch, chemical and fire resistant.
Other colourings such as cold enamel or paint do not
have these properties or colour stability and soon become
dull looking.
Decoration using vitreous enamel has been around a long
time –items produced in the 13th century BC have
been found but we do not claim that our products will
last that long!
A more famous and recent example of the use of vitreous
enamel are the eggs and jewellery
made by Faberge.
Vitreous enamel is essentially glass that is fused onto
metal and the colour is varied by the addition of different
metal oxides to the glass.
Early examples of vitreous enamelled objects- approximately
4000BC- show strips of gold, silver, copper or brass
attached to the metal base to form a network of small
cells into which the enamel is laid. This is known as
the ‘Cloisonne’ technique. |
