When the impression on the metal
is sufficiently sharp, often achieved by striking the
metal more than once, the excess metal around the design
has to be removed by ‘clipping’. In the old
days this was done on a ‘hand press’ as shown
and you could always tell people who did this as they
were bent almost double from continual bending over the
presses!
You could not expect operators to work the same today
though for small batches the same type of press is still
used. The use of air to drive the presses takes all the
hard work away. |

| Once
we make any product with a company or organisation’s
logo, we retain the die used for stamping and many of
the dies date from the founding of the firm over 50
years ago. All of course are catalogued and some will
be for firms who have since gone out of existence. Some
of the older dies have designs that have since become
collector’s items- enamelled pump clip beer brands,
Tiger motifs that went on the front of Leyland buses.
We also have all the tools used for clipping out the
logo as explained above though of course some designs
will have a similar shape and the same tool can be used.
